The Aragonese Castle of Castrovillari was built by Ferdinando I of Aragon. The construction, completed around 1490, consists of a rectangular body composed of 4 cylindrical towers. The largest tower, the so-called “mastio”, is known as the “infamous tower” because of the terrible punishment inflicted on prisoners locked up in it. The manor, used as a prison until 1995, is now open to the public and is one of the best preserved castles in the region.
