The town is located in a natural valley called “Conca del Re”, at 362 m above sea level. Castrovillari is the largest town in the Pollino National Park, surrounded by the Calabro-Lucano Apennines and with the Coscile river that runs along it. The town is clearly divided into two areas: the modern part, lying in a flat area, and the older one, with a centre where the most important historical-artistic evidence are. Among these: the Aragonese Castle and the ancient Franciscan convent.
