Located on a hill about 300 meters above sea level, the historic center of Rossano shows monuments of great importance. Founded by the enotri around the eleventh century BC, Rossano between 540 and 1059, under the rule of the Byzantines, experienced a phase of great social, artistic and cultural splendor. The most interesting sites are the Cathedral, the Church of San Nilo (the saint who moved up to Grottaferrata, near Rome, to found the Greek Abbey of the same name) and the San Marco Oratory.
