San Giovanni in Fiore stands on a slope at the foot of Montenero, inside the Sila plateau. With its 17 thousand inhabitants it is the most populated municipality in Italy over 1000 meters. In the lower part of the town, near the confluence of the rivers Neto and Arvo, there is the Florense Abbey, founded by Abbot Gioacchino da Fiore. From this medieval religious center, in 1189 developed the first residential nucleus of the town, mostly formed by peasant families.
