Cassano allo Ionio is a town of about 18’000 inhabitants, located in the center of the Sibari Plain, in northern Calabria. Some scholars have dated back the origins to the Neolithic age, as can be seen in the extraordinary Caves of Sant’Angelo. Among the most significant monuments of the town, the Cathedral (minor basilica) is of particular importance. It is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin, which was built on a temple dedicated to Jupiter according to popular legend.
